Sheffield Wednesday and manager Carlos Carvalhal separated after the loss to Middlesbrough. The fans saw the Portuguese coach.
The defeat against Boro, who curiously also saw Garry Monk fired, leaves Wednesday in 15th place after a bad run and closer to the relegation zone than in the play-offs after consecutive play-off campaigns under the supervision of Carvalhal.
After arriving as a relative unknown in 2015, Carvalhal took on Wednesday within 90 minutes of promotion, only to lose a play-off final against Hull City. The following year they were one step below that mark, losing to Huddersfield in the semifinals.
Wednesday's president, Dejphon Chansiri, said:
"Both parties believe that it is time to follow our paths separately."
"I would like to offer my sincere thanks to Carlos for the time, effort and commitment he has given to Sheffield Wednesday in the last two and a half years.
"I have great respect for Carlos as a coach and as a person and will always be welcome in Hillsborough.
"I wish you much success in the future."
Carvalhal is expected to return to Portugal, where Benfica has an eye on him to replace the tough Vitoria.
