Gianluigi Buffon has confirmed his retirement from international football after Italy did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The legendary goalkeeper had previously indicated his intention to get away from the Azzurri after the tournament in Russia. But Italy was eliminated from the World Cup bout with a 0-0 draw in the first leg with Sweden on Monday in Milan, while visitors advanced in the group after a 1-0 first-leg victory.
It marked the first time that the four times winners of the World Cup had missed the final since 1958.
The legend of Juventus said he was not saddened by the end of his international career, but rather by the effect the result will have on Italian football.
"It's disappointing," said Buffon Rai Sport as he struggled to hold back the tears.
"Not for me, but for the football movement, because we failed in something that could have been really important for the country, that's the only regret I have and it's certainly not that my career is ending, because time passes and It's fair.
